Venice
No words can express the haunting beauty and romance waiting to be experienced
in Venice. In fact finding words to express adequately the beauty and uniqueness
of Venice has occupied writers for centuries. The magic of the city has
bewitched travellers for centuries and yet never loses its power to enchant
us.
Venice owes its origins to the collapse of the Roman Empire. As Visigoths, Ostrogoths and other lesser Goths swept across northern Italy, the natives took to the small islets and sandbanks of what would become known as the Laguna Veneta.
Once you set foot on the lagoon city, otherworldly fairy-tail qualities will be revealed. Whether shrouded in mist and fog or bathed in glorious sunshine, Venice needs to be seen to be appreciated.
Must see and do:
- As Venice lives on water, the whole city is an experience. Taxis, the
Police, even refuse collectors go about their business on the broad canals
and narrow waterways. It doesn’t need to be said that the thrill
of visiting this unique city is to ride a gondola and view the city in
a different way.
- With its Byzantine and Renaissance architecture, opulent palaces,
charming piazzas and wistful romantics would say you haven't lived until
you've enjoyed the delights of Venice. A first trip to Venice is a truly
unforgettable experience, but with over 119 islands, 400 bridges and
over 2,000 alleys, there is always something new to discover even for
seasoned visitors.
- In Venice you can rediscover the pleasure of a city without cars, of
stunning landmarks like St Mark’s Square, the Doge’s Palace,
and the Bridge of Sighs, to name but a few.
- You can even view the breathtaking artistic masterpieces at the Academia
and Guggenheim galleries.
- To get to know a more personal side of the city, try making take time to saunter through the back streets and residential quarters.
Rather than the more expensive designer boutiques of the Mercerie, more affordable shopping can be found on the streets around the Rialto Bridge or the Lido. Once you have exhausted yourself with all the of the days activities, you can relax by soaking up the atmosphere of San Marco in one of the squares’ famous cafes like Florians or Harrys Bar. Many of them have live music bands outside in good weather, and the performance is free. While listening, you can of course, savour fine cuisine and wine, with the warmest of Italian welcomes – Venetian style.
