Planning your trip
Camping is a carefree hobby, but even so it is best to book well in advance for the peak season, or for your first or last stop close to the ferry crossing.
Look over the site before you decide to stay if possible. Sites change hands regularly and things change. When you look over the site think about whether it has:
- a good supply of clean water
- is clean with good wash facilities
- is well lit with clear paths
- has good flat and firm ground for your tent
- has the utilities that you need for example electricity, camping gas, laundry, food etc
Test out your tent on the lawn before you go on your trip – so that you know how to put it together quickly and easily – just in case you get to the campsite late or when it is dark, or your tent is damaged!
Ensure that you are covered by the appropriate motor insurance.
Camping by the side of the road and car parks is prohibited. On some camp sites tents and awnings will be charged extra!
Not all gas bottles from other countries can be filled or exchanged because of different valve types. Check requirements and availability in advance.
Check electrical connections. Adapters can be bought in most countries and on ferries.
Medical insurance: you are advised to arrange travel insurance with medical cover before going on holiday.
