Majorca
Majorca is the largest island of the Balearic chain and it is beautiful,
It has fabulous beaches, great watersports, gentle walks through tiny mountainside
villages and tasty tapas lunches in the stylish capital Palma. Palma has
a great weekly flea market, a top quality department store and many boutiques.
You can get the contrast of the mountains, beaches, pine forest and the villages – all
in one trip.
The beaches are located to the north and east. The north has long stretches of sandy coastline and the east, beautiful pine coves. You can relax on the beach, explore, do some watersports or take a boat trip. The famous local produce you can hunt down on your shopping expeditions includes embroidery, wood carvings from olive trees, kitchenware, leather goods and the famous artificial pearls. You can get a strong sense of local tradition by tracking down one of the many good local restaurants or going to a ballet or play at the Auditorium in Palma. The key places to visit on the island are:
- Palma and its Cathedral
- Roman towns of Pollensa and Alcudia
- Island villages such as Burger and Campanet
Puerto Pollensa is popular with families and one of the prettiest resorts. It has good sand and shallow waters for safety. The watersports are good entertainment. You also have the option of choosing the main beach or the smaller coves. There is a marina area that houses shops, cafes and restaurants. The main old town of Pollensa is a maze of narrow streets – great for exploring. The mountains and cliffs of Formentor are nearby.
Alcudia is a large bay, with lots of amenities laid on for families. There
is a waterpark and wetland nature reserve nearby. It has a long soft sandy
beach and a very good choice of watersports. You can also explore the town
and the coastline by boat.
C’an Picafort is located at the centre of the bay of Alcudia, on
the northeast coast. It has a friendly family atmosphere and a large stretch
of golden beach – with the option of finding yourself a cove near
the cliffs at Cabo Formentor. This resort used to be a small fishing village,
and still has a working harbour which has restaurants, shops and boat trips
on offer.
Cala d’Or is one of the east coast’s most beautiful areas. It
has a series of coves that are like mini resorts. The beaches are of different
shapes and sizes – but they do get very busy. This resort is lively
and has the best choice of shops, bars and restaurants.
