Kefalonia
The setting for the romantic story of Captain Corellis’s Mandolin - This Greek mountainous isle is one of the most popular destinations of the Ionian Islands and the biggest of the group; With its cliff and caves, picturesque little ports and sleepy villages in herb scented hills and not to mention those beautiful beaches – all combine to create the perfect place to enjoy a family holiday. It is simply described as the old Greece with modern comforts.
Kefalonia has many wonderful beaches with fine sand and turquoise, bleach-like
waters, specific to the island. The best beaches can be found just south
of Lixouri, while near northern Fiskarda you will find the unspoilt and tranquil
bays. Nevertheless Skala has its fair share of beautiful sandy beaches with
a selection of watersports that are
available and Lassi has five sandy bays
which shelve gently into shallow seas.
There is plenty to do which includes the chance for some island hopping to some of the Ionian islands of Meganissi, Lefkada and Onassis. Not to be missed is Ithaca, an inspiration to poets and artists alike, where you will find a haven of peace and tranquility. There is also a National Park on its highest mountain (Mount Ainos) where you will find terrific landscapes. Argostoli is worth a visit by night to soak up the atmosphere of a truly cosmopolitan capital. You will also find castles on the island.
There is plenty to feast on when it comes to food in Greece. You are sure to find something for all the family. From the speciality dishes ranging from whitebait to octopus, squid and swordfish, to the more popular traditional Greek dishes such as Moussaka and Souvlaki. You will also find some excellent island wines available.
Fortunately nightlife is low key. This is why Kefalonia is a favourite for
families. Being the capital, you will obviously find that Argostoli is the
most up-tempo town and Lassi is a thriving town with a healthy helping of
bars and restaurants. Elsewhere, the evenings are generally spent wining,
dining and people watching from outdoor taverna tables.
